As part of a cooperation program between Cameroon and Spain, a delegation of Spanish navy officers have visited the Douala Maritime Museum on Tuesday the 20th October 2026.
Led by 1st grade mid shipman Martin Agha, the delegation was led through the graphical representation of Cameroon’s maritime history hosted by the Maritime Museum.
During the visit, they were schooled on the origin of the name “Cameroon” linked to the Wouri river which was termed “Rio dos Cameroes” in the 15th century by Portuguese explorers.
They also got first hand information on the German colonisation as well as the rich cultural heritage of the Sawa peoples of Cameroon.
An exibition of the evolution of shipping in Cameroon was also part of their guided tour of the museum, including a show of the various elements of the maritime navigation in Cameroon, including the captain’s cabine, safety and rescue equipment and ship models.
The last part of the visit took the naval officers through a virtual exploration of Cameroon’s coastline using the museum’s navigation simulator.
