As part of the labour week activities organised by staff representatives and the Sports and Cultural Association of the Cameroon National Shippers' Council (CNSC) towards the commemoration of the 136th edition of the International Labour Day, Wednesday, April 27, was set aside for a guided tour of some facilities of the Douala Sea Port. This was an opportunity for many employees of the CNSC to witness port activities first-hand.
Note that the Port of Douala is Cameroon’s major seaport, now seconded by the port of Kribi. Located on the shores of the Wouri River, it measures about 24 kilometres upstream with road and rail lines leading to all major cities of Cameroon. This deep-sea port is home to most of the country’s international trade as well as that of neighbouring landlocked countries like the Central African Republic, and has facilities for the handling of cargoes such as timber, gasoline, clinker and a variety of exported edibles.
The guided tour took the delegation through the various anchorage points, where one could see anchored ships being emptied and the different sections handling different types of cargo. Douala Port Security (DPS) agents providing security at the port found the tour a window to marvel their visitors with the state-of-the-art surveillance system which gives them an eye in all strategic sections of the port. The tour ended with a group picture and the sharing of souvenir gifts since by African custom, a welcomed guest either leaves with their bag full or their belly filled.
