All vehicles coming into Cameroon are required to pay a tax generally referred to as customs duty. However, some vehicle dealers always refrain from meeting up with this financial requirement. In a bid to reduce costs, they devise dubious means to clear their vehicles from the customs department without paying this very important fee which is a key source of State revenue.

Some may succeed in smuggling their vehicles into the country without paying this fee (customs duty) which is then transferred to the buyer when they attempt to register their newly acquired road machines with the Ministry of Transport. The Cameroon Customs Department has developed an application which can save you from falling into the hands of such defaulters. The application dubbed COSMOS (Cameroon Customs Monitoring System) has been in use for several months now and is dedicated to the control of motor vehicles imported into Cameroon.

The said application is available on the following website: www.portran.cm and is accessible via the internet (PC, telephones, tablets, etc.). Owners of motor vehicles and persons interested in acquiring such vehicles are hereby invited to ensure the presence of the vehicle identification number (VIN) in the COSMOS database. They can, if necessary, contact the competent Customs Services in order to proceed with the regularization of applicable duties and taxes, with a waiver of penalties up to 31 December 2022.
