CAMEROON NATIONAL
SHIPPERS' COUNCIL

The British High Commissioner to Cameroon disclosed this on January 25, 2022 after meeting the Minister of Finance.

Declaring to the media after talks in Yaounde on January 25, 2022, with the Minister of Finance, Louis Paul Motaze, His Excellency Dr. Christian Dennys McClure said they discussed a range of issues, including Cameroon's budget and finances and the United Kingdom's engagement with the country. "Relations between our two countries are good," he noted. "We look forward to the PROMOTE trade fair next month as an opportunity to expand our collaboration with Cameroon," Dr. McClure revealed.

Economic ties with the UK were strengthened when President Paul Biya on June 28, 2021, signed a decree ratifying the Stepping Stone Agreement towards a Bilateral Economic Partnership Agreement, earlier signed on March 9, 2021, in London. The agreement is described as a "stepping stone" because some of the terms still need to be discussed. The deal allows for duty-free and quota-free access to the British market for Cameroonian products. On the other hand, Britain can export up to 80 percent of its products to the Cameroonian market duty-free.

Currently, UK trade with Cameroon is officially estimated at US $263 million (about 152.9 billion FCFA). The UK supplies manufactured goods, machinery, mechanical and electrical equipment, vehicles, and pharmaceutical products to Cameroon. A study published in 2019 by BKP Economic Advisors says 13 percent of Cameroon's €10 million (6.53 billion FCFA) banana exports are shipped to the UK. According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), without a bilateral agreement between Cameroon and the UK after Brexit, Cameroon's overall exports to the UK would have dropped by 28 percent, representing US $17.1 million (9.9 billion CFAF).
