CAMEROON NATIONAL
SHIPPERS' COUNCIL

Cameroon aims at complying with the maritime training standards of the STCW 1978 Convention. This was the key point of the meeting held on 24 April 2023 at the conference hall of the Ministry of Transport, where minister Jean Ernest Masséna Ngallè Bibéhé met with Mr. Laurent Galy, a consultant working for the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

The Inspector General of Marine Training was in Cameroon, on behalf of the IMO, to determine the level of implementation of the 1978 International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) in the country, and to assess the shortcomings and possible needs which will serve as a basis for establishing technical assistance. This assistance, which will be provided subsequently, will therefore enable Cameroon to issue maritime certificates and licences.

The meeting was also attended by the Secretary General of the MINT, the Inspector General of the MINT, the Inspector General in charge of training at the Ministry of Employment and Vocational Training (MINEFOP), the General Manager of the National Ports Authority (NPA), the Deputy General Manager of the NPA, the Director of Maritime Affairs and Waterways, as well as representatives of stakeholders of the port and maritime sector. The Cameroon National Shippers’ Council (CNSC) was represented at this high-level meeting by Messrs. Yamen Achile and Tonye Merveille.

On the sidelines of this audience, the IMO Consultant held a working session with the stakeholders of the maritime sector at the head office of the National Ports Authority in Yaounde.
